7 Benefits of In-Home Physical Therapy

Mobile physical therapy is becoming a popular option for those with busy schedules. Physical therapy can be time consuming and often difficult to attend as it often requires 1-2 office visits per week, as well as dedicated adherence to an exercise program. Mobile physical therapy is a service where your physical therapist will meet you at your house or office instead of in a clinic. Here is a list of some of the benefits of mobile physical therapy.

No Driving

The clinic you go to may be just down the street, or 20 minutes away, but regardless you will be driving away from your cozy home. Having the PT come to you, allows you to finish that last minute task, eat the much needed snack, or spend a few extra minutes with your family before you take time to care for yourself. Since your physical therapist is coming to you, not only will you save time, but gas too! Additionally, with some injuries, diagnoses, or conditions, you may not be able to drive, leaving you to rely on other friends and family, public transportation, or paid drivers. Scheduling your PT at home allows you the freedom you deserve with your physical therapy and health.

Comfort

In-home physical therapy visits will allow you to exercise in a safe and comfortable environment. Home based physical therapy will allow you to exercise without judgment from other clients in a clinic. You may be hesitant to work out in front of other people due to your injury, or your level of experience with exercising. As the treatment sessions are in your home, you don’t have to worry about what other people may think and you can learn to exercise in a safe environment.

Avoiding Illnesses

When doing home-based physical therapy, you limit your exposure to other people who are potentially sick. During flu and Covid season, respiratory illnesses are easily transmitted, especially in a gym where people are working out and breathing heavier (think treadmill). If you let your physical therapist come to you, you are only exposed to one person vs. a group of people. Feel safer at home, knowing that you are limiting your risk for exposure this holiday season.

One on One Physical Therapy

With mobile PT, you are guaranteed uninterrupted time with your physical therapist. Since you are the only patient around, there is no one else for your therapist to be distracted by. You and your therapist will be able to develop a better understanding of each other, and focus your health goals together. One on one care has shown time and again better health outcomes with faster rates of recovery.

Exercise Prescription

The home therapist will be able to see the space you have set up in your home and the equipment that you have at home. With this in mind, the therapist will prescribe exercises that your space allows for. In a clinic, it is hard to replicate your home environment, and a therapist may prescribe exercises that require a lot of floor or wall space. If you don’t have the space, it is unlikely that you will do the exercise. For those who work at home, in-home visits can be vastly helpful in evaluating your work environment to see if the work space is the culprit for your pain.

Evaluation of Hobby or Sport

Are you only getting pain while you do a specific activity? Meeting a physical therapist outside of a traditional clinic will allow you to demonstrate the aggravating factor. The therapist will be able to show you better body mechanics to avoid pain while performing the activities you love.

The benefits of in-home physical therapy are endless. In our busy lives, it's often challenging to find time to care for ourselves.
